Introduction

When you create your WordPress site, your homepage will by default show your latest posts. To be more precise, it will be a Hello World sample post that’s already in WordPress. In most cases, you wouldn’t want that, right?

Here’s a quick guide on how to set a custom homepage in WordPress.

Adding a new page

First, you need to create your homepage. Go to PagesAdd new. Here you need to name your page. Let’s call it Homepage. After that, click Publish in the upper right corner of the screen.

Now you have a brand new (blank) page that you can set as a homepage. In this example, we won’t worry about designing or making content. We will leave that to you.

  1. Go to SettingsReading
  2. Under Your homepage displays check the A static page circle
  3. From the Homepage dropdown menu select a page you wish to set as a homepage
  4. Click Save changes

Congratulations! Now you have a properly working homepage!

If you have a blog, and you want to have a separate page for displaying your posts, you need to define your posts page. On that page, you’ll have all your previously published posts visible and organized chronologically. 

Design and customization of your blog page are based on your web theme or your own design (if you use page builders like Divi or Elementor).

How to set a posts page in WordPress

  1. Go to Settings → Reading
  2. Under Your homepage displays check the A static page circle
  3. From the Posts page dropdown menu select a page you wish to set as a posts page
  4. Click Save changes

Difference between pages and posts

Posts are most commonly used as news content or as content to explore certain topics. Each post has an author and the date when it was published.

Some post examples are 8 Reasons to Hire Digital Marketing Agency, Visuals in Digital Marketing: Why They Matter More Than Ever, etc.

Pages don’t have a chronological order, date, or author. They are the main content of your website. Some page examples are: About us page, Services page, Contact page, etc.
